Overview

Aluminium rolled products is the umbrella category for every aluminium form made by rolling a cast ingot down into flat, continuous stock — sheet, coil, foil and plate — as opposed to extruded products, which are pushed through a shaped die to make profiles like window frames or structural sections. Rolling is the dominant way aluminium reaches manufacturers who need a flat, workable metal surface, which makes this category one of the largest single uses of primary and recycled aluminium combined.

The Rolling Process

Production starts with a large cast aluminium ingot, or slab, which is heated and passed repeatedly through hot rolling mills to progressively reduce its thickness while it's still hot and more malleable. Once the metal reaches an intermediate gauge, it typically moves to cold rolling — rolling at room temperature — to hit tighter thickness tolerances and improve surface finish, with annealing (controlled reheating) used between passes to keep the metal from becoming too brittle from repeated deformation. The specific combination of alloy, rolling schedule and heat treatment determines whether the final product comes out as thin, flexible foil or thicker, stiffer plate.

Major Products and Recycling

Beverage can stock is one of the largest single end uses within this category, and one where recycling plays an unusually central role: aluminium cans can be recycled back into new can stock repeatedly with minimal quality loss, and using recycled aluminium takes a small fraction of the energy required to produce primary aluminium from bauxite. That's a big part of why the world's largest player in this space, Novelis, describes itself as both the largest producer of rolled aluminium and the largest recycler of aluminium cans — the two businesses reinforce each other, with recycled scrap feeding directly back into new rolled product.
