Overview

Aluminium scrap is recovered aluminium metal — offcuts from manufacturing, or metal recovered from products that have reached the end of their working life, like cars, buildings and cans — collected, sorted and sold as feedstock for remelting rather than for its finished form. Because aluminium can be remelted essentially indefinitely without losing its basic properties, scrap is a genuine substitute for primary metal in many applications, and it now makes up a large and growing share of total global aluminium supply.

How It's Manufactured

"Manufacturing" scrap really means collecting and processing it. New scrap, also called prompt scrap, comes directly from manufacturing plants — trimmings, punchings and off-spec material generated while making rolled or extruded products — and is typically clean, single-alloy, and returned quickly to remelting. Old, or post-consumer, scrap comes from products reaching end of life: cars, appliances, building components and used beverage cans. It's collected through recycling programs and scrap dealers, then shredded, sorted by alloy and density, often using eddy-current and sensor-based separators, and baled or briquetted before being sold to a secondary smelter.

Byproducts

Processing scrap generates dross, similar to primary smelting, along with non-metallic residue — paint coatings, plastic linings, insulation and other materials attached to end-of-life products — that must be burned off or separated before the metal can be remelted cleanly. Shredding operations also produce a mixed non-ferrous and ferrous residue stream that gets sorted further for other recoverable metals. Salt slag, generated when lower-purity scrap is remelted using a salt flux to separate metal from oxide, is a byproduct that needs specific handling because of its reactivity with water.

Who Consumes It

Secondary aluminium smelters are the direct buyer, remelting scrap into ingot for foundries or into alloys for specific end uses. Beverage can manufacturers are unusually heavy scrap users, since used cans are one of the cleanest, most consistently graded scrap streams available and can be recycled back into new can stock repeatedly. Automotive parts makers and general foundries also buy scrap-derived secondary alloys, which are often better suited to casting than the tighter-tolerance rolled or extruded products made mostly from primary metal.

Everyday Uses

Most people take part in the aluminium scrap chain without thinking about it, simply by putting a used drink can or foil tray in a recycling bin — that starts the metal on its way back into a new can within a matter of weeks in an efficient recycling system. Scrap yards and municipal recycling programs also pay for larger household aluminium items like old cookware, window frames and car parts, giving consumers a direct, if minor, economic stake in the scrap trade.

Industrial Uses

Automotive recyclers dismantle end-of-life vehicles specifically to recover aluminium engine blocks, wheels and body panels, an increasingly valuable stream as cars use more aluminium to cut weight. Construction demolition and renovation generate scrap from removed window frames, siding and structural components. Manufacturing plants often run internal scrap loops, remelting their own trim and offcuts on site to buy less primary metal — both a cost saving and, given how much less energy remelting takes than primary smelting, a meaningful emissions reduction.
