Overview
Aluminium sheet is flat-rolled aluminium in the middle of the thickness spectrum — thicker and stiffer than foil, but thinner and more flexible than plate — making it one of the most versatile finished forms the metal comes in. Its combination of light weight, corrosion resistance and workability makes it a default choice wherever a manufacturer needs a formable metal surface without steel's added weight.
Production and Alloys
Aluminium sheet starts life as a cast ingot, which is progressively rolled down in thickness through a series of hot and then cold rolling passes until it reaches the target gauge, with the metal's grain structure and mechanical properties adjusted along the way through the specific rolling and annealing schedule used. Different applications call for different alloy families: 3xxx-series alloys (aluminium-manganese) offer a good balance of formability and moderate strength for general sheet use, 5xxx-series alloys (aluminium-magnesium) add corrosion resistance prized in marine and transport applications, and 6xxx-series alloys (aluminium-magnesium-silicon) are heat-treatable for higher strength, common in automotive body panels.
Applications
In construction, aluminium sheet is formed into roofing, wall cladding and window components, valued for not rusting the way steel would in the same exposed conditions. In automotive manufacturing, it's increasingly used for body panels and structural components as carmakers look to cut vehicle weight and improve fuel or battery efficiency, a trend that has made automotive one of the fastest-growing end markets for higher-grade aluminium sheet. Packaging is a third major use, where thinner-gauge sheet is formed into containers and closures that benefit from aluminium's combination of light weight and an effective barrier against moisture and light.
