Overview
Recycled aluminium is metal recovered by melting down scrap rather than producing new metal from bauxite ore, and because aluminium can be remelted essentially indefinitely without losing its basic properties, most of the aluminium ever produced is still in use somewhere in the economy, whether as its original product or several recycling generations removed from it. The industry distinguishes between "old scrap" — aluminium recovered from products at the end of their life, like scrapped cars or demolished buildings — and "new scrap," offcuts and rejects generated during manufacturing that get remelted almost immediately. Recycled metal typically costs less than primary aluminium and, because remelting takes so much less energy than smelting from ore, has become an increasingly large share of total aluminium supply as sustainability pressure has grown.
How It's Manufactured
Recycling starts with sorting and preparing scrap: shredding, sorting by alloy type where possible, and removing non-metallic material like plastic, rubber, and coatings, often using a mix of magnetic separation (to pull out steel), eddy-current separation (which uses induced magnetic fields to eject aluminium from a mixed stream), and increasingly sensor-based sorting that can distinguish between aluminium alloys. The sorted scrap is charged into a furnace and remelted, sometimes with a flux added to protect the molten metal from oxidizing and to help separate metal from any remaining contaminants. Molten metal is then sampled and adjusted with alloying additions to hit a target specification, skimmed of dross, and cast into ingots, billets, or delivered molten to a nearby casting plant.
Byproducts
Remelting aluminium scrap produces dross, an oxide-rich skim that forms on the surface of the molten metal bath; it still contains a meaningful amount of recoverable metallic aluminium trapped inside the oxide layer, so specialist processors reprocess dross to extract that metal rather than sending it straight to landfill, though what's left after that recovery, called salt cake when a salt flux was used, is a genuine waste stream that needs proper disposal because it can react with water and release flammable and toxic gases. Coatings, paint, and plastic components stripped from scrap during preparation are another waste stream, sometimes burned for energy recovery in the remelting furnace itself rather than discarded separately. Compared with primary smelting, though, recycling produces no red mud and only a fraction of the emissions.
Who Consumes It
Casting foundries are major buyers of recycled aluminium, since cast alloys (used for engine blocks, wheels, and other automotive components) tolerate the trace impurities in recycled metal better than high-purity applications do, making recycling especially well suited to the auto industry. Beverage can manufacturers are another large buyer, running some of the most efficient closed-loop recycling systems in any industry, where a can can be back on a shelf as a new can within roughly two months of being recycled. Extruders and rolling mills use recycled content, often blended with primary metal, for construction products, window frames, and general-purpose sheet. Secondary aluminium smelters — companies that specialize purely in remelting and refining scrap — sit between scrap collectors and these end users, supplying much of the industry's recycled feedstock.
Everyday Uses
Consumers interact with recycled aluminium constantly, often without realizing which of their products came from scrap versus new metal, since the two are frequently blended. Beverage cans are the most visible example — many countries recycle the large majority of aluminium cans, and a substantial share of new cans is made with recycled content. Cookware, window frames, ladders, and aluminium furniture frequently use recycled metal, and automotive engine blocks, wheels, and transmission housings — cast aluminium parts that tolerate impurities well — are among the largest end uses by volume. Consumers also directly participate in the supply chain by recycling cans, foil, and scrap aluminium items through curbside collection or scrap dealers, feeding material straight back into this loop.
Industrial Uses
The automotive industry is the single largest industrial consumer of recycled aluminium, using cast alloys made substantially or entirely from scrap for engine blocks, transmission housings, and wheels, since casting alloys are more tolerant of the trace iron, silicon, and other elements that inevitably carry over from mixed scrap streams than wrought alloys used in sheet and extrusions. Construction firms use recycled aluminium in window and door frames, roofing, and siding. The packaging industry runs some of the tightest closed-loop recycling of any material, remelting used beverage cans back into new can stock repeatedly. Machinery and equipment manufacturers use recycled aluminium castings for housings and structural parts where cost matters more than the very tightest purity or strength specifications that primary metal can guarantee.
