Overview

Value-added aluminium products cover everything made by fabricating primary aluminium metal further — extruding it into profiles for windows, doors and structural sections, rolling it into sheet, coil and foil, casting it into automotive and machinery components, or drawing it into wire and cable — as distinct from raw ingot, billet or primary metal sold in its cast form. The category is where most of the economic value in the aluminium chain is actually added, since fabricated products sell at a substantial premium over the metal they're made from.

India's Push for Value Addition

India's downstream aluminium sector has struggled to capture that value: its extrusion industry has roughly 3 million tonnes of installed annual capacity but runs at only about 1.2 million tonnes of actual utilization, while more than 1.5 million tonnes of finished aluminium products are imported each year, aided by zero or near-zero tariffs under free trade agreements even as primary aluminium imports face duty. Industry groups have pushed policy initiatives such as "Aluminium Bharat" to rebalance tariffs and encourage more domestic fabrication.
