A Byproduct, Not a Primary Metal

Almost no mine on Earth digs specifically for rhodium — it comes out as a small byproduct of platinum and palladium mining, overwhelmingly from South Africa. That means rhodium supply barely responds to rhodium's own price at all; miners are digging for platinum group metals as a whole, not rhodium specifically.

One Job: Cleaning Exhaust

Rhodium has essentially one major industrial use — reducing nitrogen oxide emissions inside catalytic converters, in both petrol and diesel vehicles — with almost no jewellery or investment demand to smooth out the swings. That narrow demand base, on top of famously thin supply, is exactly why rhodium prices can move by multiples in a single year.

Scrapped Cars as a Real Second Mine

Because rhodium is so scarce and valuable, recovering it from scrapped catalytic converters has become a genuine secondary supply source in its own right, not just an environmental afterthought — specialist recyclers actively target end-of-life vehicles specifically for their PGM content, and that recovered metal flows back into the same global market as newly mined rhodium.
