Sovereign Gold Bond Price Reference Today

Sovereign Gold Bonds don't trade continuously against a live tick like a stock — their issue price is fixed for each RBI tranche, based on the average gold closing price (999 purity, IBJA reference) over the 3 business days before subscription opens. The live gold spot rate on MetalsCost, currently around ₹14,244.27 per gram, is the closest daily reference point to understand where that issue price is likely to land.

Once a tranche is issued, the fixed issue price stays your cost basis — you don't get repriced daily the way a gold ETF holder does. Your bond's market value if sold on the exchange before maturity, however, does move with the ongoing gold price.

Why SGBs Are Different From Buying Gold Outright

The 2.5% annual interest is the feature that sets SGBs apart from every other way of holding gold — physical, digital, or ETF. It's paid on the initial investment amount, credited to your bank account (or reinvested, depending on the scheme), regardless of how the gold price moves. Combine that with a capital-gains tax exemption at full maturity, and SGBs can end up outperforming plain physical gold on a total-return basis over the 8-year term, even before accounting for the making charges and storage costs physical gold carries.

The catch is availability and liquidity. SGBs are only issued during specific RBI-announced windows — you can't walk into a bank and buy one on any random Tuesday the way you can buy digital gold. If you need to exit before year 5, your only route is selling on the exchange, where trading volumes can be thin and the price may differ from the underlying gold value.

Is a Sovereign Gold Bond Right for You?

SGBs tend to suit investors with a genuine multi-year horizon who want gold exposure as a portfolio diversifier rather than jewellery to wear. If your priority is liquidity — buying and selling on short notice — a gold ETF or digital gold fits better. If you specifically want physical gold for a wedding or gift, none of these substitute for it.

This page is for general information, not investment advice. SGB tranche dates, interest terms, and tax rules are set by the Government of India and RBI and can change — always confirm current tranche details on the RBI's official SGB page before investing.

Sovereign Gold Bonds — Common Questions

An SGB is a government security issued by the RBI on behalf of the Government of India, denominated in grams of gold. Instead of holding physical gold, you hold a bond whose value tracks the gold price — with the added benefit of a fixed 2.5% annual interest paid on your investment.

The issue price for each SGB tranche is set as the average closing gold price (999 purity) for the last 3 business days before the subscription period, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA). It isn't identical to the live spot rate shown on this page, though it's closely related — today's reference spot price is around ₹14,244.27 per gram.

SGBs have an 8-year tenure, with an option to exit early starting from the 5th year on interest payment dates. They're also listed on stock exchanges, so you can sell on the secondary market earlier if needed, though liquidity can be limited.

Capital gains on SGBs are exempt from tax if you hold the bond to full maturity (8 years). The 2.5% annual interest, however, is taxable as per your income slab. If you exit early on the exchange or during an early-redemption window, capital gains tax rules apply as they would for physical gold.

SGBs avoid making charges, storage risk, and purity concerns entirely, and add 2.5% annual interest on top of gold's price movement — advantages physical gold doesn't offer. The trade-off is that SGBs are only available during specific RBI issue windows, not on demand every day, and you don't get a physical asset to wear or gift.

No — SGBs are issued in periodic tranches announced by the RBI, typically a few times a year. Outside an active issue window, you can still buy previously-issued SGBs on the stock exchange (NSE/BSE) if you have a demat account, though secondary-market prices can differ from the original issue price.
