What an IBJA Rate Actually Is
IBJA — the India Bullion and Jewellers Association — publishes a daily gold benchmark rate built from London spot price, MCX futures and the USD/INR exchange rate. It's issued twice a day, an AM rate and a PM rate, tracking how the underlying market moves within a single trading session rather than freezing one number from morning to evening. The rate is expressed in rupees per 10 grams across several purity grades — 999, 995, 916, 750 and 585 — rather than a single figure.
This isn't a purely informational number. IBJA rates are the official benchmark used to price Sovereign Gold Bond issuance under Ministry of Finance and RBI notifications, and they're the reference banks and NBFCs use for gold-loan lending against jewellery, per RBI rules. That's what separates IBJA from a chart on a financial news site — it's a rate specific institutions are actually required to use.

IBJA Is Not an Exchange — That's the Key Difference from MCX
It's easy to lump IBJA in with MCX as "another gold rate," but they work on completely different mechanisms. MCX is a futures exchange: traders actively buy and sell standardized contracts on it, with margin, expiry dates and (if held to expiry) delivery obligations. IBJA runs none of that. It's an association that assesses and publishes a reference rate — there's no order book, no contract to hold, nothing to trade directly against the IBJA number itself.
The two numbers stay close because they're built from overlapping inputs — IBJA's own methodology explicitly folds in MCX futures pricing alongside the London spot rate. But "close" isn't "identical," and confusing a published assessment with a live tradeable market price is the most common mistake around IBJA rates.

Why a Jeweller's Bill Still Sits Above the IBJA Rate
An IBJA rate is a bullion-level benchmark — the raw metal value at a stated purity, nothing more. A jeweller's invoice adds making charges, wastage in some cases, and 3% GST on the combined metal-plus-making-charges value, none of which the published benchmark carries. MetalsCost's own tracked 24K reference is ₹15,031.44 per gram as of September 14, 2026; our Jewellery Calculator works out what a specific purity and weight actually costs once those retail add-ons are included, and our Glossary covers each term — hallmarking, making charges, GST — in full.
IBJA Rates FAQs
IBJA is the India Bullion and Jewellers Association. It publishes a daily gold (and silver) benchmark rate — commonly called the IBJA rate — set from London spot price, MCX futures and the USD/INR exchange rate, and expressed in rupees per 10 grams across purities like 999, 995, 916, 750 and 585.
Twice a day — an AM rate and a PM rate — reflecting how the underlying gold market itself moves within a single trading day rather than staying fixed from morning to evening.
They're an official reference point, not just informational. IBJA rates are used as the benchmark for Sovereign Gold Bond pricing (per Ministry of Finance/RBI notifications) and as the benchmark banks and NBFCs use for gold-loan lending against jewellery, per RBI rules.
MCX is a futures exchange — traders buy and sell contracts on it, with delivery, expiry and margin mechanics. IBJA is not an exchange at all; it publishes an assessed daily reference rate, with no contracts to trade. See our MCX Gold Rate page for how the exchange side actually works.
The IBJA rate is a bullion-level benchmark. A jeweller's invoice adds making charges, GST and their own margin on top — none of which the published benchmark includes. Today's tracked 24K reference on MetalsCost is ₹15,031.44 per gram as of September 14, 2026; our Jewellery Calculator works out the retail add-ons for a specific purity and weight.
